Camphill was established to work with people who are mentally handicapped, and this is still its principal role today. The intention was not to do this work as a job but as a way of life.

Tapola Camphill Community is formed of people some with special needs or disabilities, some are more able, who live, work and learn together. Tapola creates a comprehensive, therapeutic and supportive environment for individuals with mental retardation, ages 21 and older.

There is a houseparent in each house who take responsibilities for managing the household and taking primary responsibility for the people with special needs in the house where they live. They are the person you should contact if you have any questions about daily life.

Co-workers also live in the house with your family member, and they are responsible for various household tasks and care. The households are busy places. Each household has its own planning of the week of food shopping, preparation, caring for the house to make it a beautiful and comfortable place to live their daily life. They also have their own meetings where decisions are made about scheduling, festival planning and much more.

Families wish to have their village relatives home for holidays or vacations at one or more times during the year. Everyone needs time away and family time for whom that is possible. When you schedule your vacation time you should contact the householders (houseparents). Together with them you can work out individual and community arrangements. There are some people for whom families are not available for vacations we have special vacation programs such as summer camps or individually planed holiday programs available. Although it could be a great help if you have vacation access to a vacation house. Such offerings are welcomed and greatly appreciated.

One great concern of family members is what happens if things are not going well in the household. It doesn`t mean that the person have to leave the village. It is not a disaster. There is a possibility that the person can move to another house. It can happen several times if it is necessary until we find the best place for him to settle. Although if we think that a larger change is needed, we will speak with you. A primary concern is that each person has the opportunity to live and grow in a healthy environment which is meeting his or her needs.

It is important to say some words about sexuality in Camphill. We work to cultivate an atmosphere of respect and appreciation for everyone and for everyone`s choices and needs. A quick hug or holding hands signifies the importance of relationships, or just knowing that a friend is special. For those villagers who may want to have sexual relationship with another villager, there must be individual support and counselling, and the understanding accompanment of those who are responsible.
